iPhone 4S Review

Sadly this isn’t iPhone 5 we all hoped for.  No matter if you wanted larger screen, slim case or rounded glass screen those things aren’t there, yet. It’s a new spin for previous iPhone 4 but it still can impress many with a faster processor (borrowed from iPad 2), a better camera, a smarter virtual assistant and twice the storage of its predecessor.

iPhone 4S White Review

Like iPhone 3GS did back in the days to the 3f, the iPhone 4S bumps the iPhone 4 down to 2nd position while keeping it for sale for lowered price. Apple says iPhone 4S is the most amazing iPhone ever. Is it? Yes, of course it is, but read on to see whether it’s really worth an upgrade.

iPhone 4S Hardware

The Apple iPhone 4S after making revolution in industrial design with iPhone 4 last summer still remains one of the most attractive smartphones to have ever been built. Apple’s choice of materials and its manufacturing prowess are unmatched, and puts a group of other wanna-be competitors to shame. Apple didn’t need to make changes in design to make iPhone 4S as the bestselling cellphone ever created.

The iPhone 4S has the same durable glass and metal construction as the iPhone 4. You won’t find any creaks or loose parts, and the only plastic used on the phone is for the home button below the display. The iPhone 4S is a bit heavier than its predecessor by increase from 137 grams (4.83 ounces) to 140 (4.94 ounces) but you won’t feel a difference while holding it. Apple’s use of glass for both the front and back of the phone may be questioned by those who tend to drop their phones often, as it has a tendency to shatter, despite it being reinforced. But the smoothness of the glass gives you the feeling that you are holding a real premium device. Apple has covered both the front and back glass panels with an oleophobic coating that resists face grease and fingerprints better than any other smartphone I have used.

All buttons along the sides remain the same as for iPhone 4s and includes power/sleep/unlock, volume controls, and the switch for ring/vibrate are all made of quality metal and are very satisfying to use. Button feedback is just right, and you never miss a command because the button didn’t respond to your input as it usually happens with low quality plastic buttons.

iPhone 4s Performance

iPhone 4S comes with two built-in antennas to avoid call drops like it happens to iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S can now intelligently and instantly switch between those exterior antennas, in real-time, even while you’re in the middle of a call.

This generation of Apple handset comes with A5 dual-core processor you might be familiar from iPad 2 that was released this spring. iPhone 4S RAM size the same as of its predecessor and is 512MB but Apple have expanded the storage options for the iPhone 4S, and you can now choose a 64GB model in addition to the 16GB and 32GB versions that have been available before for iPhone 4.

iPhone 4S, is that it still features a small (by comparison with Samsung Galaxy S2 with 4.3-inch and Samsung Galaxy Nexus with 4.5-inch display) 3.5-inch display. It’s still nonetheless one of the best LCD screens on the market, with its 640 x 960 pixels (326ppi) of resolution and near paper-like viewing angles. The iPhone 4S’ display is noticeably different than the Super AMOLED Plus screens from Samsung, as it’s not nearly as saturated and punchy. However, the colors for iPhone 4s display seem more accurate, and the screen is just a joy to look at. I didn’t find the smaller screen size to be a hindrance in use, even though I’m used to carrying around phones with 4.3-inch or even 4.5-inch displays. As for me the optimal screen size for today’s devices should be 4-inch and that’s why I hoped iPhone 4S will get bigger screen.

Software (iOS 5)

iPhone 4s comes preinstalled with latest iOS 5 which was first shown to public back in June 2011 and only now it’s introduced to wide audience. iOS is great mobile operating system with some feature some major improvements like Siri and improved notifications, other improvements are more minor but will still improve your overall user experience.

Send messages with SiriThe one thing we will blather on about quite a bit more here is Siri. Apple bought the DARPA project called CALO.  in early 2010 and now that functionality is baked right into the iOS 5 but currently available only for iPhone 4S owners. We’ve heard that’s due to the processor demands required for voice recognition, but since you need an active data connection (Wi-Fi or 3G) to use Siri we have to imagine that the heavy lifting for voice recognition is happening somewhere inside Apple’s massive data center they built last year, which would seemingly allow lower-spec devices to do the same. And, since the iPad 2 is running the A5 at an even higher clock speed, there’s just no good reason we can think of for putting Siri exclusively on the iPhone 4S.

We were and still are amazed about with what Siri can do. Siri are capable of doing great number of things, from sending texts and emails to finding restaurants and getting directions from one place to another – all things that are possible to do without voice commands as well but with help from Siri you can do those things hands free.

And then there’s the other part that makes Siri great: you don’t have to remember the exact commands, at least, not as much as you do with Android handsets. If you want directions on Google Navigation in Android you have to specifically say “Directions to X.” With Siri you can say “Tell me how to get to X,” or you can say “Get me directions to X,” or even “Directions to X.” It’s not a major difference but it feels more like Siri has enough “brain” to figure out what you are looking for whereas the voice recognition elsewhere feels more like you have to remember to say what it wants.

Siri signals that Apple is taking a real interest in improving voice recognition and hands-free device interaction. That should mean some amazing progress from here, and we can’t wait to talk to the next generation Siri. We also hope that Siri will be able to run offline one day, because today’s Siri requires a 3G or WiFi connection to do anything. Even the simple voice commands that were available in iOS before no longer work offline, and if you happen to be one of the few who actually used those commands to change tunes while offline, you’re sadly going to have to find another way.

iPhone 4S Battery life

The iPhone 4 offered impressive battery life, and new handset offers even bigger capacity batter, but the main problems is that dual-core processors uses more power than its single core predecessor. While Apple promises up to eight hours of battery life on an active 3G connection which is up one hour from the 4. Curiously, though, standby time has dropped from 300 hours on the iPhone 4 to 200 on the 4S (probably due to new services included into iOS 5, like Siri). Other stats remain the same: 14 hours on GSM, 10 hours of video watching and 40 hours of listening to music.

iPhone 4S Battery

During this review, I was able to get through a full day, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on a single charge, with my usual battery of two email accounts refreshing at the fastest intervals, push notifications from Facebook and Twitter apps, a handful of text messages, a good amount of web browsing, and few phone calls. The iPhone 4S easily outpaces most any Android smartphone, but it doesn’t beat the best ones by a large margin. I was really hoping to be able to go 24 hours on a single charge with the iPhone 4S, but at this point, it seems like battery technology just isn’t there yet or at least Apple isn’t there to pick them up.

Camera

Another of the more noticeable changes from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 4S can be found in the camera. The iPhone 4S features a new 8-megapixel camera with an f/2.4 lens (improved from the old phone’s f/2.8) and a backside illuminated sensor that is 73 percent (according to Apple) more sensitive to light than the already impressive 5-megapixel sensor found in the iPhone 4.

iPhone 4S 8 megapixel camera

iPhone 4S camera features autofocus, with face detection, and a flash (this feature is useless just like for any other cellphone), and can record 1080p HD video with digital image stabilization. Latest iPhone also camera is significantly faster (to launch and to shoot) than before, and much faster than the competition. Photos are captured with accurate color and gobs of detail, and the interface is simple to use. The camera opens with minimal lag, and it is possible to bang out shot after shot without it slowing down between images.

iOS has simple but yet useful photo editor that allows to remove red-eyes and allows to crops images as well as add some special effects. Apple also added a camera shortcut to the lock screen and you can snap the shutter by clicking the volume-up key when in the camera app.

Video captured with iPhone 4S can be up to FullHD size (1080p). The quality is similar to mobile phone king Samsung Galaxy S II captured videos. The iPhone 4S does have an advantage with its image stabilization feature though. The iPhone also has a simple video editing feature for trimming clips down to smaller sizes but you can avoid a need to trim your videos just by choosing iPhone 4S with bigger storage.

Unfortunately, Apple stuck with the VGA resolution front-facing found on the iPhone 4 for the iPhone 4S, but it gets the job done for video calling purposes but let’s be honest, who uses their cellphones for video calling?

Conclusion

The iPhone 4S is not radically changed compared to its predecessor and doesn’t features top-tier smartphones do these days (such as a 4-4.5-inch screen or 4G LTE connectivity), but offers what is arguably the best smartphone experience of any device on the market today. Its overall user experience is improves upon the massively successful iPhone 4, and takes the crown as the best smartphone you can get. The iPhone 4S is not perfect but Apple’s simplicity, great design, and quality materials used makes it great smartphone that competitors are still trying to match. Though the iPhone 4S may not appeal to owners of the iPhone 4 due to its almost matching design to the older model, I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is looking at their first smartphone or wants to switch to iOS from another platform like Android, Symbian, Windows Phone and others. You could certainly do far worse. As the previous iPhone 3GS owners I already ordered iPhone 4S due to its design and processing speed over two generations older iPhone and you won’t regret if you plan to do the same thing.

My friend had the same problem when she first bought her iPhone 4s…this may seem silly but had you taken off the protective seal yet as it as a default comes with a protective plastic seal over the screen with stupidly covers the ear speaker.

I’ve spent many many hours in the last week researching the 4S and comparable droid phones. I’ve concluded that the 4S iphone is the best for several reasons. 4G and LTE will eat batteries faster, and the 3G speed according to many test reports will be faster than my DSL desktop computer presently gets, which is fine. You’d have to spend up toward $1000 to get a better camera than is in the 4S. The droids are for for tweekers who want to download all kinds of applications and customize everything. The Iphone is said to have fewer if any glitches and application compatibility issues, and not really need any customizations. The screen size is a tradeoff with how big a thing you have to fit in your pocket and hold against your head… I’m thinking the iphone is perfect in that way. Siri may be more of a gimmic than something I will actually use, but that’s OK. I’ll have to buy a good rubber case or rim thing so it’s glass front and back won’t break when it gets dropped, and a digital AV cable so I can hook it up to my 42 inch LCD HD TV and watch videos at 720p. I’m going to go buy one tomorrow. It truly rocks. Can’t decide which color though… White with a baby blue bumper, or black with a pine green bumper… (?) Do I want everyone in the room to notice it, or should I keep it low key… (?)
Oh and ATT is allegedly the fastest, Verizon has the best coverage but costs more, and Sprint was said to be unstable at one point, dropping more calls. Sprint may be fine now.

    • Anonymous

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the 4s records video at 1080p

  • Bob Richards

I forgot to mention that Apple allegedly has real good service support. That could be pretty important. Many iphone 4S’s have supposedly had a few problems with battery drain or reception. More people are saying they have no problems at all. Apple apparently turns on many features that you might never want to bother with as default settings. These can be turned off to extend battery life. Google to get details.

Hi im 13 and really want a new smartphone for christmas. Im really worried about signing up for a 2 year plan and having trouble/not liking the phone and not being able to get out of it. Now im faced with the question: Iphone 4s or Samsung Galaxy SII. The only reason I want an iphone is so i give my brother my ipod, since the iphone is an ipod and phone. Any suggestions????? And do you think im to young for the iphone????

    • Alex

Hey Im 13 as well and i’m getting an iphone next week. You are definitely not too young. You cant really be too young for a phone. My dad has the galaxy sII and it seems good as well but i personally prefer iphone. If i were you id go for it. From what ive read it seems like a pretty good phone.

    • Zac

Nobody is too young for iphone ;) Honestly both samsung and iphone are great. However since the main reason is for you to pass your ipod to your brother, then i think it is good you get an iphone. Afterall like you say ipod and iphone are pretty identical. Samsung galaxy will take you a while to get use to if you are migrating from ipod. Most importantly if you use an iphone, you still can port everything in your itune to your iphone. If it is samsung you need to do it all over again, which is an hassle.

  • Naga Kumar

    Hi All,

I have bought my new iPhone 4s. But i am not at all satisfied with it. It has got so many problems. First thing is when ever i call a number, i hear echo of my own voice. I replaced it with another iPhone 4s from where i bought. But the same problem exists with this also. I never expected this from Apple. I had so much of passion for iPhone but after seeing this problem…. i totally lost my interest. I called even the iPhone guys but no use…. if you still get it… you have to live with it;…… :( i am totally dissatisfied…….

    • Xxx

Maybe your reception due to carrier… Not phone?

  • Diana

I have the iPhone4 and I have 2 problems with it. If you are talking on the phone and need to use your hands and you use your face and shoulder to hold it, your cheek either mutes the call or ends it. Is there a way to fix this? Is this problem fixed on the 4s? I don’t like speakerphone so that’s not an option…My other problem is that my home button forgets its a button. So if I get in an app and need to get out of it, I’m stuck. The button will NOT work :(

    • Lolo

There’s 2 antennas in the 4s. Apple did this to eliminate what has been called the “death grip”. So if one antenna is blocked it automatically switches to the other (pretty clever actually).
Not sure of the muting problem. Haven’t had that problem, but I don’t really balance the phone btwn my shoulder and cheek so that doesnt mean u won’t have the same problem with 4s.
      Hope this helps.

      • Laxlogan39

I have the ifone4 right know wats the diff beteew them besides Sheri

  • Ethan

BTW: If you are looking some cool case for your iPhone you can check cool store here: http://myiphone4scases.com/

  • Ramesh Srivastava

iPhone 4S features as compared to the older iPhone 4 are really not much of an upgrade. I mean what is the point of launching a new phone, which practically looks the same, feels the same and features wise is more or less the same. The only difference being the iPhone 4S is significantly much more expensive than the iPhone 4. They’ve just created a fake buzz around their new device and are fleecing their customers in making them believe that they are buying a new iPhone when in fact it is nothing but the old iPhone with just a few added features.

    • Xxx

Which is why its the 4s and not 5… Some improvements but not a leap ahead,.

  • Dada

@ Bootstrap. You are a sad, sad soul.

  • prabhakar

was planning on getting a 4s but now am totally confused.
what is this unlocking. i am buying a new phone

    • Ethan

If you are buying iPhone from your mobile carrier you don’t need to unlock it unless you want to switch operator.
If you buy iPhone 4S elsewhere make sure it’s unlocked or at least locked to your mobile carrier.

  • Shafeer

    Can i trust iphone 4s.
or Should i go for Galaxy s2 ???
    Please help me ….
Which is the best option ???

    • Ethan

It depends on your requirements. Samsung has larger screen and 4G option but it’s built quality is questionable at least compared to iPhone 4S which feel more premium but it doesn’t mean that iPhone is more durable.

  • Ashlond

    Ok. Few questions..
1.) I have the Droid Pro and i am wanting the iphone 4s. I kinda drop my phone a lot. Lol. Is it easily shattered, and do you recommend me getting it?
2.) My other question… Is Siri so amazing like Apple acts like it is?

    Thanks :)

    • Ethan

If you will drop iPhone 4s on concrete it will more likely to shatter than any other phone. Its metal and glass combination makes premium look and feel but is very easy to shatter once dropped.
Siri is interesting and completely different interaction with your phone and it really can does a lot but it’s far from perfect.

  • Lucy

i think the iphone is like th eipod touch

  • Jenn

Just got my 4s today and I must say that Siri is pretty neat. I have no complaints about it. I switched from the evo 3d, and I am so glad that I did.

  • loraine

i noticed the front of the 4s black is a bit different from the white one, right next to the the front camera of the black there is that little opening am not sure what it is maybe speaker, whatever that is the black one only has one and the white has another on top of that.does anyone know know why ?

    • Ethan

It’s proximity sensor. Both black and white iPhone has that but it’s just much more noticeable on the white.

  • mayank sharma

i want iphone4s can u tell me the price

  • Patrick

Think I know the answere but just want to make sure. Is the iPhone 4s 4G capable? Can’t seem to find a solid answer on this.

    • Ethan

      Patrick,
No iPhone 4S is not 4G capable.
If you are looking to get maximum internet speed in US using your iPhone 4S you should go for AT&T as they are the only ones who offer HSPA+ (14.4 mbps) connection instead of CDMA (7.2 mbps) supported by Sprint and Verizon.

      • Patrick

        Thank you Ethan.

  • Sunil

I bot d I-fone 4s two days back n my fone is getting heated up each tym I charge it or use it ! Anybody facing d same ????

    • Anonymous

It’s normal for it to generate heat while charging.

    • Limpdickfucka1

charge it somewhere open, and learn to spell

  • Samboycott

If the world is demanding so much of iphone 4s then what about the reports of the other smartphone makers. iphones are manufactured in the US only and do not have any manufacturing units else where in the world.
Only some iphone parts are outsourced from different countries for lowering the cost.
Firstly if iphone is outsourcing the mobile parts then how cum the iphone costs too much.
Apple said “Apple now has more cash to spend than the United States government”
If iphone has more money than the US government then, it is earning with a illegal profit margin with its products. App lovers should know this.
Then why does the world government have a balance over trade and exports, any businessmen can do anything at any rates.
Apple is spreading rumors for having too much demand of its iphone 4s.
This is absolutely a review not biased on/with any brand.

  • Lolo

    Got a 4s in November 2011.

First touch screen I’ve kept (had an LG touchscreen in 2010 but returned within two weeks due to difficulty with buttons and usability)
The idea of Siri is what persuaded me to finally convert (and the ease and accuracy the 4s has in correctly inputting the actual button I’ve pushed).

    I LOVE IT!
Of course there are some functions I miss from my older phones (always LG just not the touchscreen) such as sending voice messages without having to first record a memo then opt to send as a message, but the other features in this phone make it worth it.

I don’t use Siri as much now however. Seems simpler to do it by hand when I’m not driving, but I am occasionally entertained by asking Siri random things to see how she’ll respond. LOL

I have been required to try to function my bosses droid a couple of times for work related calls and have been frustrated every time with getting it to do what I need.
Will admit I’m an Apple convert before the phone but the simplicity of use for the IPhone compared to the droid is staggering (to me).

Actually quite pleased with the screen size. Any bigger and the device wouldn’t feel like a phone to me.

I bought an Otter case the day I bought my handset and have dropped my iPhone VERY hard (accidentally) about 4 times since acquiring it and my phone has continued in its’ perfection every time.

Have always been a bit of a skeptic and was sure I’d find plenty wrong with this phone within a week of buying it and regret spending the large amount of money, but as said above I’ve only noted a few features I’d gotten used to that I miss.

Oh, and so far this phone was worth every penny. Hope it stays that way.

Thanks Lolo for your review! I think this will help others to decide if iPhone 4S is right fit for them.

  • IamSugarH

This phone is really amazing to me. It’s my first ever touch screen phone. I hated touch screen phones back then but Iphone 4s changed me. What I love the most is the 8mp camera. It’s like I have bought a phone and a digi-cam in one expense. Really good memory too. I just LOVE it. :)

just order the iphone 4s, is it worth the price of it?

    • Russell Sergiades

The iphone 4S is the most wonderful tool. It has made my life so much more efficient and convenient. It is so intuitive that it feels like an extension of my brain. Simply brilliant.

I got problems on the battery life . The battery gets low for only an average standard time of 12 hours. What shall i do? Please do hell me on this. I only bought this yesterday.
